In this hectic world, I'm often amazed at why there have never been standards enforced pertaining to assigning numbers to everyday phenomena. Granted, we're a diverse race, but for the life of me I cannot understand why we must use multiple methods of measurement in order to determine that a nickel is worth $.05...
And then, Convert comes to the rescue! This small utility handles every conversion I can throw at it, with never a whimper. The list of built-in tabs is long: Acceleration, Amount of Substance, Angle, Area, Computer, Concentration, Density, Distance, Energy, Flow, Force, Light, Mass, Power, Pressure, Speed, Temperature, Time, Torque, Volume (both Dry and Liquid), and a Custom tab for plugging in any factors or units you may desire, such as current money exchange rates.
The program sits quietly in the tray, uses a meager 300K of memory when idling, and occupies only 550K of disk space. It's very quick (even on a cranky old testbed machine) and rock solid. I have never seen Convert crash or cause any trouble of any kind, and it loads instantly, ready to work. Although the executable is dated 1999 (which is ancient in our geek universe), its reliability and cross-platform effectiveness are testaments to Mr. Madison's programming prowess. The no-frills interface is lean, mean, and very understandable.
This handy little app has become a necessity for my everyday computer use, especially here in the Freeware Center with the variety of program file sizes - now, if Convert could only tell me how to exchange a yen for a yang! ; ) |
